Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, casting a warm golden glow over the breakfast table where Dorothy, Zoe, and Buttons sat. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filled the air, creating a comforting ambiance. Dorothy, clad in her favorite floral apron, dished out pancakes onto plates, her mind busy with thoughts of the previous night. Zoe's eyes sparkled with mischief, and Buttons, ever the curious feline, eyed Dorothy intently, his tail flicking back and forth.
"So, Gran," Zoe began, her voice laced with anticipation, "how was the rest of your evening with Frank last night?"
Dorothy, her cheeks tinged with a rosy hue, tried to divert the conversation. "Pleasant. It was nice to catch up after all these years.â And then she stopped talking and turned back to the pancakes..
But Zoe wasn't one to be easily deterred. "Come on, spill the details. Did he bring up any embarrassing moments that happened to the two of you when you were younger?"
"Did he hold your hand?â Buttons chimed in, his eyes narrowing playfully. âCats are excellent judges of character, you know."
Dorothy chuckled, the corners of her eyes crinkling with amusement. "No, no embarrassing stories, and definitely no hand-holding. We simply enjoyed dinner and conversation."
"But you do like him, donât you, Gran?" Zoe asked, her eyes searching Dorothy's face.
Dorothy hesitated for a moment before a small smile tugged at her lips. "Yes, but the past is past, so weâll have to see how things unfold in the present."
Buttons, ever the astute observer, purred softly. "Love is a delicate dance, my friends. Let it waltz in its own time."
Both Dorothy and Zoe looked at him, surprised.
âThat was lovely,â Zoe said. âI may steal that to put in a story.â
Buttons snorted.
With that, the trio continued their breakfast, their conversation shifting to the day's plans.
"So, I've been thinking about all of that unsavory gossip that Max revealed yesterday,â Dorothy said as stabbed her fork into her last bit of pancakes. âI still can't believe that Reggie was possibly involved with Emily Miller!"
Zoe scoffed. "Just goes to show you that even small town politics are corrupt these days."
Dorothy scrunched up her nose as she made an unpleasant face. "Emily was not a nice person when we were in school together, and I don't think much has changed, even now."
"What was she like?" Buttons asked. âTell us more, and perhaps weâll be able to figure out if she has indeed changed.â
Dorothy grabbed some empty plates from the table and put them in the sink for washing. "We were rivals, Emily and I. Grades, boys, sports⦠You name it, we were at each other's throats. Neither of us was willing to back down from our rivalry. Even at graduation, I was asked to give the commencement address as valedictorian, and Emily threw such a fuss because our grade point averages were so close, she felt like she should have given the speech.â
âVery petty,â Buttons commented.
Dorothy's eyes took on a far away look as she continued clearing the table. "Yes, it was Such a ridiculous rivalry.
